The Lake Belton Broncos hosted the Georgetown Gateway College Preporatory Gators on Tuesday evening, looking to secure their first berth in the program’s history.

The Broncos collected 14 hits and starting pitcher Zakayia Fredrick struck out 12 Gators over four innings, as Lake Belton run-ruled Gateway, 15-0.

While Fredrick struck out the side in the first inning and three of the four batters she faced in the second inning, the Broncos gave the sophomore hurler plenty of run support throughout the contest.

Madison Lux drove home Autumn Holman with an RBI single in the first inning. Shelby Schultz’s suicide squeeze scored Lux to give the Broncos a two-run cushion. Elaina Herrera’s triple down the third base line scored Shelby Schultz. Fredrick’s fielder’s choice suicide squeeze scored Herrera. Fredrick scored on a Hannah Jensen single to give the Broncos a 5-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

The Gators collected their lone hit of the ballgame with two outs in the top of the second when Brylee Mathis hit an opposite field single to right field.

Lake (20-4 overall, 6-0 District 19-4A) responded with four runs in the bottom of the second. Shelby Schultz’s two-run single scored Holman and Lux. Casey Schultz singled Shelby Schultz to third base, and they pulled off a double-steal, which scored Shelby Schultz. After Casey Schultz stole third base, she scored on Herrera’s sacrifice fly to give the Broncos a 9-0 lead.

Following Fredrick retired the side on strikeouts in the third, the Broncos followed with another four runs. Jensen singled and was run for by Madyson Updyke. Updyke stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Vic Shimabukuro walked and on the passed ball, Updyke scored. With one out, a bunt single by Lux scored Shimabukuro. Casey Schultz reached on an error. With two outs, pinch hitter Haley Hoffman hit a double to the right-centerfield gap to scored Lux and Casey Schultz to increase the Lake Belton advantage to 13 runs, 13-0.

After another three-strikeout inning, the Broncos delivered the two-run game-clincher. Pinch-hitter Anna Ramirez doubled to start the inning and scored on Jensen’s single. Updyke came on to run for Jensen and advanced to third on a beautiful bunt single by Holman. On a 1-1 pitch to Lux, Gateway starting pitcher Alaina Aguilar uncorked a wild pitch to the backstop to score Updyke and end the game in run-rule fashion.

Fredrick was dazzling in the circle in a complete-game win. She pitched four innings, allowed no runs on one hit and struck out 12.

Jensen had three hits to lead the Broncos’ hit parade, as Lake left three runners on base. Shelby Schultz had three RBI, while Herrera, Jensen, Hoffman, and Lux scored three times.
