Girls Varsity Softball · Nine-run first inning, combined no-hitter fuels Bronco Softball to Bi-District Championship over Eastside Memorial, 17-0


The Lake Belton Broncos hosted the Class 4A Bi-District Softball Playoff against the Austin Eastside Memorial Panthers in a one-game playoff at Bronco Diamond.

Lake scored nine runs in the first inning and got a combined no-hitter from Zakayia Fredrick and Shelby Schultz, as the Broncos claimed their first playoff win and Bi-District Championship with a 17-0 win in five innings.

Fredrick got the start in the circle and struck out the side in the first inning on 13 pitches.

The Broncos sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Autumn Holman blasted a 1-1 pitch from AEM starting pitcher Casey Cruz over the right field wall to give Lake a 1-0 lead.

Casey Schultz’s double drove in Shelby Schultz, and Casey scored on an overthrow on a stolen base attempt at third base. Elaina Herrera walked, and Madison Lux worked a 2-0 count before Cruz was lifted for Analycia Herrera. Lux walked, and a double-steal scored Elaina Herrera. Lux scored on Angie DeLeon’s double. DeLeon scored on Fredrick’s double. Madyson Updyke came out to courtesy run for Fredrick and scored on Hannah Jensen’s single. Trinity Collins ran for Jensen and Haley Hoffman walked. Collins and Hoffman both scored to put the Broncos up 9-0.

Fredrick retired the side in the second inning on 10 pitches.

The lingering showers that plagued the area returned in the frame, as the Broncos continued to rain offense on the Panthers’ defense.

Lake Belton posted six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Elaina Herrera drove a shot into the right field corner and she circled the bases for an inside-the-park homer to lead off the inning. Lux singled and advanced to third on an error. Lux scored on DeLeon’s second double of the game. Fredrick reached on an error and Updyke came on to run. Jensen singled home DeLeon and was run for by Collins. Collins advanced two bases on wild pitches and Updyke scored on Holman’s bunt single. Holman singled home Collins and Shelby Schultz reached on a fielder’s choice to score Holman to give the Broncos a 15-0 lead.

Fredrick retired the side again in the third inning, this time on 15 pitches.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Broncos scored two more runs. Fredrick singled in Lux and Shelby Schultz had a squeeze bunt scored Anna Ramirez to increase Lake’s lead to 17-0.

Shelby Schultz took over in the circle in the final two innings, as she struck out six and walked two to close out the game.

Lux scored three runs and five others scored two runs apiece. Holman, Shelby Schultz, DeLeon and Fredrick each had two runs batted in.

The Broncos are now 25-5 and will play the winner of the Lufkin Hudson-Robinson series in the area playoff round next week
